Care & Maintenance Guide

How to Care for a Stainless Steel Worktop: Cleaning, Scratches & Patina

Stainless steel is easy to clean, hygienic and built for daily use. But it does develop fine scratches and a soft patina over time.
Here’s what real care looks like — daily, weekly, and after 6–12 months of cooking.

A stainless steel worktop is one of the most practical surfaces you can choose. It resists heat, spills, staining and daily cooking.
But unlike stone or laminate, it doesn’t stay visually “perfect” — it develops a natural, even patina of fine scratches.

This guide shows you exactly how to clean it, what to expect after months of use, and how to pick the right finish if you prefer less visible wear.

Daily Cleaning: 30 Seconds, No Special Products

Stainless steel doesn’t need polishing or treatments. Just simple, consistent cleaning.

You need:

  • A soft microfiber cloth
  • Warm water
  • A drop of mild dish soap (optional)

How to clean (daily):

  1. Wet the microfiber cloth with warm water.
  2. Add a tiny drop of mild dish soap (optional).
  3. Wipe along the grain direction of the steel.
  4. Rinse the cloth and wipe again with clean water.
  5. Dry with a second microfiber cloth for a streak-free finish.

Do & Don’t

  • Do: Wipe spills when convenient — especially acidic foods.
  • Don’t: Use abrasive pads (no scotch brite, no steel wool).
  • Don’t: Use chlorine-based cleaners or oven sprays.

Weekly Deep Clean (Optional)

If you want a stronger shine or need to remove fingerprints, a weekly clean helps.

Use:

  • Microfiber cloth
  • Mild dish soap
  • Glass cleaner (safe for stainless) or dedicated stainless spray

Steps:

  1. Clean normally with warm water + mild soap.
  2. Spray a small amount of stainless-safe cleaner.
  3. Wipe gently along the grain.
  4. Dry to finish.

Tip for patterned steel

Patterned stainless (StalaTex) hides fingerprints better and doesn’t require polishing.
A simple wipe-down is usually enough.

Scratches & Patina: What Happens After 6–12 Months

The biggest worry for new buyers — and the most misunderstood part of stainless steel.

What you’ll see:

  • Fine, shallow scratches following the grain direction.
  • A soft, even “matte” patina building over time.
  • Lower visibility over the months — scratches blend together.

What you won’t see:

  • Deep gouges from normal use.
  • Patches or “ruined spots.”
  • Rust or staining from food acids.

Why this happens

Stainless has a directional grain. Fine scratches accumulate in the same direction and gradually blend.
After a few months, your worktop has a soft, even patina that hides new scratches better than when brand new.

If You Want Fewer Visible Scratches, Choose the Right Finish

All stainless steel develops a soft patina over time. But some finishes hide it far better than others.

StalaTex® – the best choice for hiding wear and fingerprints

StalaTex isn’t just a decorative pattern. It’s an advanced laser-texturing technology that creates a
permanent, tactile surface directly in the stainless steel. This gives the material a depth and softness
that dramatically improves how it handles daily wear.

Compared to traditional brushed steel, StalaTex surfaces:

  • Diffuse light reflections, preventing scratches from “catching the light”.
  • Hide fingerprints and smudges more effectively.
  • Develop an even, elegant patina that blends future wear into the texture.
  • Maintain the stainless look, but with a warmer, more refined expression.

The pattern is not painted, coated or printed — it is part of the steel itself.
That makes StalaTex exceptionally durable and an ideal choice for bright kitchens,
open-plan spaces or homes where the worktop gets a lot of natural light.
